Ultrafiltration Filter
For urban areas that experience many problems with drinking water, there is the latest solution, namely Ultrafiltration Filter technology, although initially it was commonly used for industrial purposes such as the food or pharmaceutical industry. Now ultrafiltration systems have been known as competitive pre-treatments for reverse osmosis systems, commonly called the Integrated Membrane System (IMS).
Generally, the UF system is considered a commercial alternative to conventional filtration because of its high membrane costs. However, currently UF membrane prices have fallen considerably, with the arrival of the Asian membrane industry. Therefore, there is no doubt, UF is now a competitive pre-treatment system for RO in various raw water qualities.
Ultrafiltration Filter (UF) is a separation process using a membrane with pore size in the range of 0.1 to 0.001 microns. Usually, UF membranes will remove high molecular weight substances, colloidal materials, and organic and inorganic polymer molecules. Organic and low molecular weight ions such as sodium, calcium, magnesium chloride and sulfate are not removed by UF membranes. Because only species with high molecular weight are removed, the difference in osmotic pressure across the surface of the UF membrane can be ignored. The low pressure applied is therefore sufficient to achieve a high flux level of the Ultrafiltration membrane. Membrane flux is defined as the amount of permeate produced per unit membrane surface area per unit time. Generally fluxes are expressed as gallons per square foot per day (GFD) or as cubic meters per square meter per day.
The UF ultrafiltration membrane can have very high flux but in most practical applications the flux varies between 50 and 200 GFD at an operating pressure of about 50 psig differently, the reverse osmosis membrane only produces between 10 and 30 GFD at 200 to 400 psi.
